Rod Brouhard is currently a paramedic in Modesto, California. He's been in emergency medical services since 1987 as a volunteer firefighter, emergency medical technician, paramedic, and educator. He serves as a paramedic preceptor, training paramedic students one-on-one. Rod has an Associate Degree in Business Administration.

Rod directed the EMS Program at Modesto Junior College - one of the oldest community colleges in California - from 1996 to 2006. He trained emergency medical technicians and oversaw the first responder, pre-paramedic, and electrocardiogram interpretation courses. In 2005, Rod was honored as EMS Educator of the Year for the Mountain-Valley EMS Agency, a five-county region in Northern California.

Rod served on the advisory council for the paramedic program at California State University Stanislaus in 2005.

In March 2006, Rod was given the prestigious Star of Life Award from the California Ambulance Association. In May 2006, he received the national Star of Life Award from the American Ambulance Association. Rod was also honored as Paramedic of the Year for 2006 by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3199.

In September 2005, just days after Hurricane Katrina, Rod responded as
part of the huge mobilization of emergency medical services to South
Mississippi and New Orleans.


Since April 2006, Rod has been the Guide to First Aid at About.com. About.com is part of The New York Times Company.

Rod's writing credits include EMS Magazine and EMS Product News. He's written for regional publications in New York and California. He is a regular contributer to the Modesto Bee, a McClatchy Newspaper.

Rod speaks on issues surrounding emergency medical services. He has appeared several times to speak about his experience in Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina. He's been quoted in Newspapers across the country, on CNN Radio, and has appeared on FOX News Live with Jamie Colby. Rod is a regular guest on the Preschool Rock Moms internet radio show.
